“Not mind or body, but mind and body.”  Joseph Pilates

Pilates is a physical and mental fitness training system that establishes a close link between physical energy and mind control, breathing, and uniform muscle development.  Designed by German physical therapist Joseph Pilates at the beginning of the 20th century, Pilates is beneficial to the body, mind, and spirit.  Nowadays it has spread throughout the world and has thousands of devout followers.

Athletes, pregnant women, the elderly, the chronically ill…old or young, man or woman, anyone can benefit from what Pilates has to offer.  When adapted to each individual’s needs, it can always improve one’s general state of health.

Here at the Personal Training and Pilates Studio of Xanit Health & XTENSAL, we have challenged ourselves both to provide personalized training programs for everyone and to aim for constant improvement.  We teach classical/traditional Pilates in its most pure form, and always adapt our methods to each person’s individual needs.  Regardless of your age or level of fitness, we will explain in this post and other posts to come how Pilates can be beneficial to you no matter what.

Before someone begins a Pilates training program, they undergo an exhaustive medical exam with our medical personnel so that we can get a comprehensive understanding of how their body works and therefore also of how it will respond to exercise.  Thanks to this check-up, we can assess each person individually, keeping in mind his or her starting point, objectives, and, in the case of prior injury, possible treatments.

We offer a wide range of options, from individualized classes with a personal trainer to small groups of up to six people.  How intense the classes are depends on the objectives identified with each person following their check-up.

Among the most groundbreaking services that we have available are our Pilates classes using different types of advanced equipment.  These state-of-the-art apparatuses—including items such as vibrating platforms (Power Plate), suspension training (TRX), and compressed air equipment (Keiser Pneumatic Fitness Equipment)—allow us to optimize class results.

At the Pilates Studio we also use the more traditional apparatuses, such as the Pilates Reformer, Cadillac, High Chair, and Barrel.  With this equipment it is possible to exercise either sitting or laying down, which can be very effective for older people or for those undergoing certain types of treatment.

As we get older, we can lose some of our balance, flexibility, and general physical fitness.  However, all of this can be improved via regular Pilates training.  For example, it is becoming more common to see Pilates prescribed as a way to prevent the onset of osteoporosis.  In light of this, at our center we use a DXA scan to check the bone mineral density of all people over the age of 65 who want to begin practicing Pilates.

Pilates is also beneficial for pregnant women.  It helps future mothers improve their posture, their balance, and their stability.  It can also help reduce the development of varicose veins, as well as aiding the regulation of the blood glucose level (which is related to gestational diabetes).  In addition, Pilates promotes strength and flexibility in the pelvic floor muscles.  All of these benefits also contribute to a shorter postpartum recovery period.

This is merely a taste of the health benefits that Pilates has to offer.  And, in reality, the best way to find out what you think is to come try it for yourself.  Are you up for it?  We’re so sure that once you’ve tried the magic of Pilates, you won’t want to stop that we want to give you a class for free! 😉 To take advantage of this offer, all you have to do is leave a comment on this blog post explaining what you find interesting or appealing about Pilates and why you would like to try it with us, along with your full name (first name and last name).

You have until April 30th, 2013 to leave your comment here.  After you’ve done so, in order to claim your free class, just come to Xanit Health at the Corte Inglés on the Avenida de Andalucía in Malaga during mall opening hours.  There you’ll simply need to explain that you left a comment on the blog and give us your name, and after that you’ll write down the time and date of your free class.  Pretty easy, right?  We look forward to seeing you soon!
