What is defined as Medical Tourism? Medical Tourism occurs when a person consciously chooses to travel to a particular location which is considered to be beneficial to their health due to the particular climate, natural resources, or the healthcare facilities offered. Medical Tourism is a sector which is clearly defined by demand, and should not be confused with ‘Health Tourism’ which occurs when foreigners travel to a particular location in order to utilize the public healthcare services, in many cases at no cost.

Furthermore, medical tourism has become a growth sector within the Spanish economy and is forecast to generate revenue of between  50.000 and 100.000 million Euros.  In Europe alone, which is the principal market for Spain, figures show that 9 million citizens have travelled abroad for treatments and medical care.

In the case of Vithas Xanit, from which countries do these foreign patients come to the hospital?

Each year our hospital cares for some 600.000 people, 40% of whom are foreigners. We attend to patients originating from more than 90 different countries, mainly British, Germans and Scandanavians. However, we also receive many Russian and Finnish patients, and we are also seeing an increase in the amount of Chinese patients in the hospital.

Which are the specialities most in demand?

We are renowned for our Cardiology and Oncology Departments. The specialities most in demand are Traumatology, General Emergencies and Paedeatrics, Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery, Internal Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics, General Surgery, Pneumology, and Digestive Specialist.

What special services do you offer for these types of patients?

In order to offer a Multicultural and Multidisciplinary Service to each of our foreign patients, we have an International Services Department. This is available 24 hours a day and offer’s personalised care in 16 different languages (English, French, German, Dutch, Finnish, Swedish, Danish, Russian, Arabic, Italian, Japonese, Chinese, etc.). At Vithas Xanit we understand the importance of communicating with our patients in their own language.

Furthermore, in coordination with different departments within the hospital,  the International Services Department understands and deals with any administrative requirements laid down by the different national healthcare systems in order to ensure that patients and their families receive personalised high quality care, and excellent medical treatment. We also have a Welfare Service (caring for patients) who visit patients on a daily basis to assist them with their needs.

Do you have a web page designed for foreign patients. Can you tell us about this?

Of course, in order to cater for the growing demand from foreign patients we have set up a web page exclusively for Medical Tourism (www.xanitmedicaltourism.com ). This website takes into consideration the motivations, needs and expectations of these patients.  The site is available in 8 different languages, and is divided up into different geographical zones, focusing on those medical and surgical treatments which are most in demand in each respective area.
